Functional medicine is unique in that it focuses on the whole individual and not diagnosing the disease they have, but rather what is causing it.  Picture a river with a popular fishing hole at the end where some of the fish are dying because the water is polluted.  You can clean the water and try to add some nutrients to hopefully help the fish survive, but this is not going to solve the problem, maybe just maintain or minimize it.  Not until we look upstream to see where the pollution is coming from can we make a lasting change.  In this case, we would see that the pollution was coming from a factory further upstream, and addressing this would actually fix the problem.

My Approach

I believe the body has the ability to heal and that vibrant health can preempt disease.

Functional medicine looks at the individual and all aspects of an individual’s lifestyle, beliefs, and genetic predispositions and seeks to identify and address the root causes of disease and imbalances.  I look at how all areas of your life are connected and educate you on lifestyle interventions that will make an impact on your goals.  This is not a quick fix and requires out-of-the-box thinking, swimming against the current, and above all else a willingness to change.

One of the unintended consequences of the global pandemic is shining a bright light on our collective human deficit of resilient health.  Just treating symptoms does not create sustainable health.  

The conventional medical approach while brilliant at addressing emergency and acute needs has not been effective at reversing chronic disease.  We have become a culture where suboptimal, vulnerable health is the norm. Despite loads of treatment.

The balance between different organs in the body and how they interact is a key factor in creating an environment of vitality.  Our bodies have an innate ability to heal under the right circumstances and even prevent disease from occurring in the first place. 

Food as a first-line therapy

The foundation of functional medicine is the use of food as a first-line therapy.  The right nutrition, combined with lifestyle and behavioral interventions will help you take charge of your health.  Many nutrition experts give their clients a list of foods to avoid and foods to eat, without first understanding where the client is at nutritionally and emotionally and if they are able and willing to sustain those interventions.  My approach is different – I meet the client where they’re at in order to support them on this path.

It’s easy to overlook all of the things that contribute to our sense of nourishment and fulfillment. It’s not just the food we eat that affects our health, but all of the other factors present in our daily lives. We want to minimize crap food, stress, and toxins and maximize nutritious food, healthy relationships, and regular physical activity.
